Scotts Miracle-Gro.
In 2016, Scotts acquired Blossom, a manufacturer of Internet-enabled irrigation controllers, and reached out to Swenson He to redesign the existing Blossom mobile app and integrate it into a new line of in-house smart products under the Gro™ brand. Coordinating simultaneous design, hardware, software development and stakeholder management, Swenson He delivered a beautiful companion application for the launch of the Gro™ product line in December 2017 that reduced consumer onboarding steps by 80%, doubled in-app functionality and integrated with multiple 3rd party services.

Lawn and garden leader Scotts Miracle-Gro recognized an opportunity for digital and gardening to come together for a new generation of products and consumers. Their “data to dirt” transformation was spearheaded by the launch of an ecosystem of next-generation tech products and smart systems that reads weather reports and samples soil moisture to intelligently optimize lawn watering.

Simplified setup for maximum efficiency
We approached our collaboration with Scotts Miracle-Gro with the intent to identify value-add for every aspect of the app. Our core focus was to simplify the user experience in order to surpass user expectations. Swenson He identified important pain points in the Blossom app, such as initial setup of network connectivity. Instead of improving the existing onboarding and setup UI, we collaborated with Scotts engineering teams and proposed an entirely revamped set-up process that significantly simplified the user experience.

Getting the User Experience right
down to the last button
Our focus on UX simplification also extended to the rest of the app. Our design and engineering teams created comprehensive user journeys and tap trees to ensure a streamlined experience. Multiple iterations were tested and user feedback captured and implemented at every step. New functionality was also incorporated to allow multiple devices within the Scotts Gro™ ecosystem to work together seamlessly.

Aligning the UI
To enhance the user experience, great care was taken in creating an innovative UI that was in line with Scotts Miracle-Gro and their new line of products’ branding.
